This is a particle system and material I've been working with to get a basic rain effect. Next, I will be experimenting with a different material to give the rain a less noodle-like appearance. Hopefully I can make this rain a trigger-able event so we can optimize performance and add darkening skies and wet textures to deepen the story telling features.
